No Ground to Cover? An Overview of Patio Gardening
Do you love to plant, but do not have tons of space to do it? Have you ever thought of utilizing the unused space on your deck or patio? There are many ways to spruce up the look and feel of your patio. With convenience being one, there are many benefits to patio gardening.
Privacy
A trellis is a great tool for any type of climbing plants. Not only do they look very attractive, they can add some privacy between your neighbors. If a trellis is not something you want to do, a large container plant can be a replacement but give the same benefits.
Beauty
One of the best ways to spruce up your deck or patio is to make it welcoming to all who might see. Small hanging plants, like spider plants or ferns, are visually attractive and add significance to those uninviting corners.
Convenience
You can plant vegetables or herbs to keep readily available. Most fruits and vegetables do great in pots. This is an added benefit to those who love fresh produce. Herbs are quite easy to maintain as well as very beautiful to view.
Versatility
The great thing about a patio garden is you choose how you want it to look. It can be small or large. It can be lush or minimal. It can be an arrangement of flowers or trees. The best thing is you decide.
The plants or flowers are also very nice to look at, but an added bonus – decorative pots. You can mix and match them, meaning you can put a colorful flower with a plain terracotta pot so the flower is the main focus. Or you can match the color of the flower to the color of the pot. You can also put a nice green plant with a covered pot so it is the natural look.
Ease
One benefit to a patio garden is they are very easy to maintain. Plants can be moved around to get different lighting or even indoors if needed. There are not large tools needed for the upkeep, a small garden spade for digging and a pair of scissors for trimming.
The great thing about patio gardens is that you get the experience of having a garden without using large amount of space needed for a full garden. It also saves you the energy and time spent. You can just walk out your door and there it is.

Over the years, patio gardens are becoming more and more popular. There are many styles and products available to help you enjoy your patio and garden at the same time. Summer is almost here and now is a great time to start.
When choosing your material for the foundation of your garden, it is best to choose a wood material. The reason behind this is that the wood stays cooler than most metals or stone. This helps in the natural growth of the plants. Also called decking, the wood can be raised in its own corner or part of the deck.
Building Your Own Decking
The first thing to consider is where on your deck or patio you would like your garden. Make sure to think about the lighting when choosing your area. This area must also add interest to your patio. To create diversity you can use different shaped pots and containers. If you must add additional lighting, make sure to keep it low. The lighting from indoors with the combination of outdoors is sufficient unless you want to highlight certain flowers or points of the garden.
Creating Sounds
Other ways to add interest to your garden is by using sound. This could be just a simple sound such as a wind chime in the corner. This makes the garden inviting and relaxing. You could be more complex in sound by adding a bubbling spring or even a waterfall. Water has a cooling effect, giving the impression that the garden is lower in temperature.
Finishing Touches
Keep in mind with the advance of technology; you can utilize automatic irrigation systems. This will keep you from worrying about long weekends without watering the plants. Another way to keep up with this is using container planting. This will keep the necessary amount of water for each plant.
An awning is a great tool to help keep the garden under shelter when needed. You won't have to worry about the plants getting over weathered. You can control the atmosphere better this way.
In conclusion, there are many benefits to having your own patio garden. The ease of going right out your door makes this easy for anyone to do and you get to have a beautiful garden at the same time.
